What you do is right.

You don't show the cause of the error but anyway at runtime you should not have both SLF4J and commons-logging libraries.
SLF4J is an alternative to commons-logging.

As you include SLF4 :

    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
        <artifactId>slf4j-api</artifactId>
        <version>${slf4j.version}</version>
        <scope>compile</scope>
    </dependency>

you have to exclude commons-logging.

It is surprising that Spring MVC 4 has still a coupling with this logging API.
